Tally, a startup developing a supervised AI accounting agent, has launched in Portugal to support accountants in repetitive tasks while maintaining human oversight.

The company – co-founded by Manuel Pina, CEO, and António Marcelo, COO – is entering the market with a pre-launch phase, targeting entrepreneurs and corporate finance teams, as reported by ECO/EContas.

The platform aims to help small and medium-sized enterprises modernize their accounting processes through AI-powered agents operating under the supervision of certified accountants.

At the core of the product is an AI agent designed to operate 24 hours a day, capable of answering questions and executing tasks such as issuing and sending invoices. The system also automatically reconciles expenses and revenues from bank data.

Tally combines automation with human support, with certified accountants supervising the AI agent and remaining available via WhatsApp to respond to companies. The startup is targeting 500 SMEs within the next 12 months.

The idea came from both founders’ experience observing the rapid creation of passenger transport and delivery companies. Pina served as Head of Portugal at Uber and had regional responsibilities across Southern Europe, while Marcelo worked in operations and strategy roles in delivery across Portugal and Iberia at the company.

They identified shortcomings in company setup, management, and accounting. “We noticed that there were many inefficiencies in the process of setting up a company and later in their management and accounting, especially given the large volume of transactions of these companies,” said Pina.

After exploring the space further, the founders concluded that there was no strong alternative to traditional accounting processes, creating an opportunity to rethink these workflows with the help of AI.

Building on experience with human-in-the-loop systems, the team developed a supervised accounting AI model.

Pina says this approach allows for “a very high level of efficiency in repetitive tasks and, at the same time, ensures that the accountant’s knowledge is valued and applied” where it matters most.

According to Marcelo, SMEs can now access a service that not only ensures the accounting process but also supports business management at an affordable price.

Tally is launching with a team of 10 people, including the founders, software engineers, and certified accountants. Pricing currently ranges from €60 to €220 per month.
